Access programme

Access programmes in the UK are courses which prepare mature students for entrance to undergraduate education. They are aimed at people from non-traditional backgrounds and under-represented groups. They offer an alternative to the traditional entry requirements of A-levels or AGNVQs.

Access programmes are now used by a significant number of students entering higher education. The programmes must be recognised and registered by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA). The programmes are provided by some higher education institutions, further education colleges or by adult education centres.

Students typically spend one year full-time on the course, or an equivalent period part-time. The courses cover particular subjects, along with key skills in information technology, numeracy, and communication. Study skills are also covered. Some courses offer a general programme, whereas others focus on particular subject areas such as Law or Social sciences.
