Basse-Terre

Basse-Terre is the préfecture (administrative capital) of France's Caribbean overseas département of Guadeloupe. With a population of approximately 13,000 it is also one of the most beautiful cities in the Caribbean.

The city was founded in 1643. Destroyed many times as a consequence of the Anglo-French wars it has remained a very charming city up till that day.


Basse-Terre is also the name of the western of the two largest islands of Guadeloupe. Population: 175,000. The city is on this island.
