Battle of the Golden Spurs

The Battle of the Golden Spurs was fought on July 11, 1302, at Courtrai in Flanders. A large force of French knights was defeated by footsoldiers from the Flemish cities. The battle marks the beginning of the decline in importance of knights in European warfare. It is also a landmark in the development of Flemish political independence, and it still commemorated every year in Belgium.
