In 1279, Chinese general Zhang Hongfan of the Yuan Dynasty anniliated the last fleet of the Southern Song Dynasty at Yamen, (today Xinhui County, Guangdong Province).

As a consequence. Lu Xiufu and Song Di Bing, the last emperor of Southern Song Dynasty committed suicide by jumping off a cliff into the sea. Zhang Shijie, commander of the Song fleet, escaped from the scene but was later drowned when his ship was brought down in a storm.
