Bliss symbols

Bliss symbols were invented by C. K. Bliss after World War II. The concept behind Bliss symbols was to create a universal written language to augment one's native language, easy to learn and free of ambiguity, allowing communication between people who do not speak the same language.

Bliss is based on the concept of Chinese ideograms, with which Bliss familiarised himself in Shanghai while a refugee from Nazi persecution.

Bliss consists of several hundred basic symbols that can be composed together to generate new symbols to represent new concepts.

Bliss symbols have become popular as a method of communication for people with selective brain damage, for whom it can be impossible to learn character-based languages.
