British 8th Army

The British Eighth Army was one of the best-known British Army formations in World War II, fighting in the campaigns in North Africa and Italy.

The Eighth Army started its life in the desert of Egypt and Libya. After losing ground to Erwin Rommel's Afrika Korps it gained the initiative after the Second Battle of El Alamein under its commander General Bernard Montgomery, and participated in the ejection of the Axis forces from North Africa.

The Eighth Army then participlated in the invasion of Sicily and the invasion of Italy.
