British republicanism

British republicanism is a movement to remove the monarchy, the remaining hereditary peers in the House of Lords and all forms of hereditary privilege. Most, though not all, British republicans support a fully elected second chamber, an elected head of state and a written constitution. Famous British Republicans include Tony Benn, and Lord Dormand of Easington.

England was a republic, ruled successively by Oliver Cromwell and his son, Richard, for a few short years in the seventeenth century, after the English Revolution.
