\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,594 km² (615 mi²). 1,369 km² (529 mi²) of it is land and 225 km² (87 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 14.10% water.

\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 226,778 people, 87,295 households, and 57,527 families residing in the county. The population density is 166/km² (429/mi²). There are 90,199 housing units at an average density of 66/km² (171/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 91.14% White, 1.16% Black or African American, 2.29% Native American, 2.18% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.90% from other races, and 1.30% from two or more races. 3.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 87,295 households out of which 33.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.20% are married couples living together, 8.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.10% are non-families. 26.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.08.
