Carrizozo, New Mexico

Carrizozo is a town located in Lincoln County, New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,036. It is the county seat of Lincoln County⁶.

Geography

\nCarrizozo is located at 33°38'38" North, 105°52'39" West (33.643946, -105.877435)¹. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 7.0 km² (2.7 mi²). 7.0 km² (2.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

\nAs of the census of 2000, there are 1,036 people, 435 households, and 264 families residing in the town. The population density is 147.6/km² (382.1/mi²). There are 514 housing units at an average density of 73.2/km² (189.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 74.81% White, 0.68% African American, 1.83% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 19.21% from other races, and 3.38% from two or more races. 53.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 435 households out of which 23.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% are married couples living together, 12.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.1% are non-families. 35.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.18 and the average family size is 2.79. In the town the population is spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 27.5% from 45 to 64, and 21.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 107.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.7 males. The median income for a household in the town is $22,647, and the median income for a family is $29,625. Males have a median income of $24,583 versus $17,708 for females.
