Chadli Bendjedid (April 14 1929) was president of Algeria from 9 February 1979 to 11 January 1992. He is a former soldier in the Algerian liberation movement. He was minister of defence from November 1978 to February 1979 and became president following the death of Houari Boumedienne. He was forced out of the presidency by the miliatary following the 1991 elections.
