Codification

Codification in law is the process of collecting and restating the law of a jurisdiction in certain areas. Contrary to popular belief the common law has been codified in many jurisdictions in many areas. Some examples being the Law of General Obligations of New York State, the English Criminal Code (criminal law was originally judge made common law) and the California Civil Code. As well in civil law jurisdictions codification has occurred in such diverse jurisdictions as Lower Canada in 1866 in France in 1804, in Louisiana, Puerto Rico and other European civilian law jurisdictions.
