Cornelis Tromp

(1629 Rotterdam - 1691 Amsterdam), son of Maerten Harpertszoon Tromp and Dignom Cornelis de Haes. Commander in chief of the Dutch navy. He was in charge during the First and Second English War, during struggles in Scandinavia and Algeria. After a failure at Nieuwpoort in August 1666 he was dismissed, but Cornelis made a come back in 1672, when he fought against the French and English navy. In 1676 he became a lieutenant-admiral. Ferdinand Bol, Dutch Golden-Age painter, made his portrait. There are many contradictorial opinions about his personal life and his meaning as a 'sea hero'.
