Cornelius Krieghoff

Cornelius Krieghoff (June 19, 1815 - March 8, 1872) is probably the most popular Canadian painter of the 19th century. Krieghoff is most famous for his paintings of Canadian landscapes and Canadian life outdoors, particularly in the winter. He painted a number of variants of his most popular subject matter (e.g. Running the Toll).

Krieghoff was born in Amsterdam, but moved to New York in 1836. In 1840 he moved to Canada, where his wife Emilie was from. In 1871 Krieghoff moved to Chicago, dying within the year at the age of 56. He is buried in Graceland Cemetery in Chicago.
