Dollar General

Dollar General is a chain of limited-selection consumable retail stores operating in 27 US states. Founded in 1955 the chain operates more than 6,000 stores. The stores are typically in small shopping plazas or strip malls in local nieghborhoods.

Dollar General mixes both inferior goods and normal goods in the same store, often on the same shelf, along set price breaks of $.25, $.33, $.50, $1, $1.50, $2.00, $2.50, $3.00, $4.00, $5.00 , $6.00, $8.00, $10, $12, $15, and $20. Nothing in the store is over $20 and most items are $1 or less. All purchases are cash only.

Dollar General serves both communities that are too small for Wal-Mart to build a store in and inner cities.

Dollar General seems to be immune from the Wal-Mart effect as both the goods obtained from Dollar General and the store format are quite different.
