Dormitory

A dormitory is a place to sleep. In some hostels, dormitories can have a number of beds with little or no privacy for the residents. Halls of Residence at boarding schools, colleges and universities used to house students in dormitories. Nowadays, colleges and universities provide single or double rooms for their students, though such buildings and rooms are nonetheless often referred to as dormitories. It is often simply called "dorm" for short.

The term dormitory is often applied to suburbs or towns adjacent to large cities. For instance, Porirua is a dormitory city for Wellington, New Zealand. (In the United States, these would be called bedroom communities.)
