In December 1914, he decisively defeated the German squadron under Graf Maximilian von Spee at the Battle of the Falkland Islands, for which he was made a baronet. Sturdee commanded a squadron at the Battle of Jutland in 1916, became an admiral in 1917, and was made Admiral of the Fleet in 1921.
