East of Eden

East of Eden is a novel by John Steinbeck, based on the Book of Genesis, which tells the story of two sons' struggle for the love of their father.

It was made into a film in 1955 starring Julie Harris, James Dean, Raymond Massey, Burl Ives, Richard Davalos and Jo Van Fleet. It was adapted by Paul Osborn and John Steinbeck (uncredited), and directed by Elia Kazan.

The movie won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Jo Van Fleet). It was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role (James Dean), Best Director and Best Writing, Screenplay.

In June 2003, dubbing it "the book that brought the Book Club back," Oprah Winfrey made it her newest selection for her book club.

East of Eden is also a band who had a hit with the single "Jig-a-Jig" in 1970.
