Fayetteville, Arkansas

Fayetteville is a city located in Washington County, Arkansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 58,047. The city is the county seat of Washington County6.

Fayetteville is home to the University of Arkansas.

Geography

Fayetteville is located at 36°4'35" North, 94°9'39" West (36.076379, -94.160912)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 115.2 km² (44.5 mi²). 112.5 km² (43.4 mi²) of it is land and 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.40% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 58,047 people, 23,798 households, and 12,136 families residing in the city. The population density is 516.1/km² (1,336.6/mi²). There are 25,467 housing units at an average density of 226.4/km² (586.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 86.50% White, 5.11% African American, 1.26% Native American, 2.56% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 1.99% from other races, and 2.42% from two or more races. 4.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 23,798 households out of which 25.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.7% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 49.0% are non-families. 34.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the city the population is spread out with 19.9% under the age of 18, 25.7% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 15.8% from 45 to 64, and 8.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 27 years. For every 100 females there are 103.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $31,345, and the median income for a family is $45,074. Males have a median income of $30,069 versus $22,693 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,311. 19.9% of the population and 11.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 19.7% are under the age of 18 and 9.1% are 65 or older.

The city is served by Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport in Bentonville, Arkansas. The airport also serves Springdale, Arkansas
