Fehmarn

Fehmarn is an island and - since 2003 - a town on this island in the Baltic Sea, off the eastern coast of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It belongs to the district of Ostholstein. The area is 185 kmē.

Since 1963 Fehmarn is connected with the mainland by a suspension bridge, the Fehmarn Sound Bridge. It is 963 m long and 69 m high. On the island's opposite side there is the Fehmarn Belt, a strait separating Fehmarn from the Danish island of Lolland. The Fehmarn Belt can be crossed by ferries departing from the seaport Puttgarden. The crossing takes about one hour.

The largest part of the town is Burg, with 6000 inhabitants. In addition there are many tiny villages. The coasts are resting places for migratory birds and hence a paradise for ornithologists. In Burg there is a large aquarium comprising 40 fish tanks.\n
