Frelimo

FRELIMO Frente de Libertação de Moçambique (Portuguese: Front for Liberation of Mozambique). In 1961 FRELIMO began guerrilla resistance against white Portuguese rule. By 1964 it controlled northern Mozambique. In 1974, Portugal granted independence. FRELIMO began one-party Marxist rule of the country. An anti-FRELIMO force RENAMO continued its struggle against the government until 1992 when a peace agreement was signed. The 1994 elections ended the single-party rule of FRELIMO.
