Georgi Sedefchov Purvanov (Bulgarian:Георги Първанов) is the president of Bulgaria, since January 22, 2002. He is in favour of Bulgarian membership of NATO and the European Union. He identifies himself as a socialist. He became president after defeating his predecessor, Petur Stoyanov, in the November 2001 presidential election.
