Grant's Tomb

Grant's Tomb is a mausoleum containing the bodies of Ulysses S. Grant, a general for the Union in the American Civil War, and his wife, Julia Dent Grant.

It is in Manhattan, New York, and was finished in 1897, twelve years after Grant had died. It is the largest tomb in North America. Reputedly, over a million people attended the dediction ceremony and associated parade.

Over a period of decades, the tomb declined into a state of severe disrepair, and was considered by many to be an eyesore. Eventually renovation work was done on it, completed in 1997.

A riddle relating to Grant's Tomb, popularised by Groucho Marx, is "Who is buried in Grant's Tomb?". The traditional answer is "Nobody" - although Grant and his wife are interred in the Tomb, their coffins were laid on a raised platform, not buried.
