Hamadan

Hamadan or Hamedan (همدان in Persian) is an ancient city in western Iran, located approximately 400 km southwest of Tehran. Its Old Persian name is Hagmatana and its classical greek name was Ekbatana.

Hagmatana is thought to have been the capital city of Media. The city was one of the multiple capitals of the Achaemenid Dynasty.

Hamadan is the birthplace of Shirin Ebadi, winner of the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize.
