Sir Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzadin Waddaulah (born July 15, 1946) is the sultan of Brunei, the eldest son of Omar Ali Saifuddin, the previous sultan.
In addition to being sultan, he is also the Prime Minister, Defence Minister, and Finance Minister of Brunei.
He became Crown Prince in 1961 and became sultan on October 5, 1967, after his father abdicated, voluntarily. He has a vast private fortune, and is opposed to moves to democratise Brunei.
