Henge

A Henge as in the suffix of Stonehenge, probably refers to the similarity of the stones to the gallows or gibbets therefore "Hanging Stones" The word "Henge" now has a much wider meaning. Generally reckoned to apply to constructions of the Neolithic period, henges are usually, but not always, roughly circular areas surrounded by a bank and ditch. Often they may contain standing stones or show evidence of wooden structures, some may have burial sites. They seem generally to have been used for ritual ceremonies rather than permanent dwelling areas. One of the finest in S. England is Avebury Henge, about 20 miles N. of Stonehenge.
