Hino da Independência

The Hino da Independência (Anthem of Independence) was the first anthem of Brazil, composed by the first emperor, Dom Pedro I, with lyrics by Evaristo da Veiga. It was replaced later by the Hino Nacional Brasileiro as the national anthem for the republic of Brazil.

Portuguese Lyrics

Já podeis, da Pátria filhos,
Ver contente a mãe gentil;
Já raiou a liberdade
No horizonte do Brasil.

Brava gente brasileira!
Longe vá... temor servil:
Ou ficar a pátria livre
Ou morrer pelo Brasil.

Os grilhões que nos forjava
Da perfídia astuto ardil...
Houve mão mais poderosa:
Zombou deles o Brasil.

Brava gente brasileira!
Longe vá... temor servil:
Ou ficar a pátria livre
Ou morrer pelo Brasil.

Não temais ímpias falanges,
Que apresentam face hostil;
Vossos peitos, vossos braços
São muralhas do Brasil.

Brava gente brasileira!
Longe vá... temor servil:
Ou ficar a pátria livre
Ou morrer pelo Brasil.

Parabéns, ó brasileiro,
Já, com garbo varonil,
Do universo entre as nações
Resplandece a do Brasil.

Brava gente brasileira!
Longe vá... temor servil:
Ou ficar a pátria livre
Ou morrer pelo Brasil.

English Lyrics

Already you can, Motherland's sons,
see happy your gentle mother;
Liberty's already rised
at Brasil's horizon.

Brave brazilian people!
far off go... servile fear:
Or is set Motherland free
Or we die for Brasil.

The chains that made for us
perfidy's astute slyness...
There was a most powerful hand:
sneered on them Brasil.

Brave brazilian people!
far off go... servile fear:
Or is set Motherland free
Or we die for Brasil.

Don't fear impious phalanxes,
Who show their hostile face;
Your breasts, your arms
are battlements of Brasil.

Brave brazilian people!
far off go... servile fear:
Or is set Motherland free
Or we die for Brasil.

Congratulations, O brazilian,
Already, with viril garb,
in the Universe between nations
sparkles that of Brasil.

Brave brazilian people!
far off go... servile fear:
Or is set Motherland free
Or we die for Brasil.
