HMAS Warramunga

Two ships of the Royal Australian Navy have borne the name Warramunga, derived from the Warramunga aboriginal people of the Tennant Creek area.

The first HMAS Warramunga (D-10/I-44/D-123) was a Tribal class destroyer laid down by the Cockatoo Docks and Engineering Company Limited at Sydney in New South Wales on 10 February 1940, launched on 7 February 1942 by Mrs. F. M. Forde, wife of the Minister for the Army and commissioned on 23 November 1942. Warramunga was assigned to convoy escort duty between Queensland and New Guinea, participated in almost all of the South-West Pacific landings, was present at the official Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945, and operated in support of United Nations Forces during the Korean War. HMAS Warramunga paid off to reserve at Sydney on 7 December 1959, was declared for disposal on 22 May 1961 and sold for scrap to Kinoshita and Company Limited of Japan on 15 February 1963.

The second HMAS Warramunga (152) is an Anzac class frigate laid down by Tenix Defence Systems Propriety Limited at Williamstown in Victoria on 26 July 1997, launched on 23 May 1998 and commissioned on 31 March 2001.
