John Gould

John Gould (1804 - 1881), was an English ornithologist.

He was born in Lyme Regis, Dorset. He became the taxidermist at the Zoological Society of London in 1827, and shortly afterwards prepared his first ornithological volume, incorporating illustrations by his wife Elizabeth.

He spent two years in Australia and produced The Birds of Australia. After his wife's death in 1841 his books used illustrations by a number of artists, including Edward Lear.
