The station is situated on a viaduct crossing the main A5 trunk road at the north end of a stretch known as Kilburn High Road. It is approximately one mile south of the Cricklewood area.

It opened as Kilburn and Brondesbury on February 20, 1939, on the Stanmore branch of the Bakerloo Line. It gained its current name on September 25, 1950. It was transferred to the Jubilee Line on its opening, in 1979.
