Laura Kate Smither
Laura Kate Smither (April 23, 1984 - April 3, 1997) was a murder victim for whom the Laura Recovery Center is named. Her parents are Bob and Gay Smither.
The 12-year old girl, who was homeschooled, was kidnapped near her Friendswood, Texas, home on April 3, 1997, while she was jogging. A volunteer ground search, which consisted of more 6,000 volunteers and covered over 800 square miles, was organized for her by her community. The search for Laura quickly spread across the nation.
She was found murdered on April 20, three days before her 13th birthday. Her remains were found in a regional water detention pond 10 miles from her home.
