Lynx spiderThe Lynx spiders are hunting spiders somewhat similar to the wolf spiders and the jumping spiders. They are members of the family Oxyopidae. Six of their eight eyes are arranged into a hexagon, a characteristic that identifies members of this family. They also have very spiny legs. Common genera in the United States include Oxyopes and Peucetia. The former are the common lynx spiders and the latter are the green lynx spiders. Some members of the genus Oxyopes are abundant enough to be important in agricultural systems as biological control agents. This is especially true of the striped lynx spider, Oxyopes salticus. |
