Maccabi Haifa

Maccabi Haifa is a sport association in Haifa, Israel. It operates sports teams, most notably soccer and basketball.

Overview

Maccabi Haifa F.C (MHFC) is one the most senior football club in Israel. It was founded at 1913 and it was always known for its attractive football style and for their green uniforms. In 1992 it was bought by Yaakov Shahar, the current president. MHFC won 7 championships, 5 national cups and 2 toto-cups.

In 2002, Haifa was the first Israeli team to participate in the group phase of the Champions League. In the group phase, it defeated Greek power Olympiakos and the legendary Manchester United, both 3-0.

MHFC hold a lot of Israeli records.

  • It is the only Israeli club to qualify for the group phase of the Champions League, and has reached the quarterfinal of the Cup Winners' Cup.
  • In the season of 1993/1994 it won the championship without losing a single match (there were 39 matches in that season).
  • The highest number of goals scored in one season: 97 (1993/1994).
