According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 57.6 km² (22.2 mi²). 51.6 km² (19.9 mi²) of it is land and 6.1 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.52% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 8,993 people, 3,856 households, and 2,406 families residing in the city. The population density is 174.4/km² (451.6/mi²). There are 4,416 housing units at an average density of 85.6/km² (221.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 86.00% White, 11.54% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. 0.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
