Michael Owen

Michael James Owen (born 14 December 1979), is an English football player born in Chester. He plays the position of striker for Liverpool F.C (his squad number is 10) and also represents the English national football team in international football.

Owen is noted particularly for his speed and acceleration. He first played for his elementary school team in Wales. Owen broke all the records in his first season. Liverpool signed Owen at the age of 17. With Owen's help, Liverpool won FA Youth Cup in 1996. He scored against Wimbledon F.C on his first team debut on May 1997.

During the 1998 World Cup in France, Owen scored a remarkable goal against Argentina in the second round of the competition, although England ultimately lost to Argentina on penalties. He was named PFA Young Player of the Year for 1997/98 and BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1998.

In May 2000, Owen scored in England friendly against Brazil at Wembley. He was named in Kevin Keegan's squad for Euro 2000. Although he scored against Romania, England failed to make knockout stage.

In May 2001, Owen scored twice in last seven minutes to give Liverpool 2-1 win over Arsenal F.C in FA Cup final. He also played in Liverpool's 5-4 win over Alaves in UEFA Cup final.

He was named European Footballer of the Year in 2001.

Owen was named England captain on 16 April 2003, youngest since Bobby Moore.
