Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness (Canada)

A cabinet position created by Prime Minister Paul Martin upon being sworn-in on December 12, 2003. The related department, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada, was created largely from the department of the Solicitor General of Canada with the addition of the customs service (from the Department of National Revenue) and the Office of Critical Infrastructure Protection and Emergency Preparedness (from the Department of National Defence.

This department is in many ways similar to the U. S. Department of Homeland Security though it does not cover immigration and does cover natural disasters.

The first minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness is Anne McLellan who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister.
