Nieuwegein

Nieuwegein (population: 62,005) is a town in the central Netherlands, in the province of Utrecht. It lies about 7 km south of the city of Utrecht. The municipality covers an area of 25.65 km² (of which 2.40 km² water). It borders on the Lek River in the south.

Nieuwegein was formed in the early 1970s, when the former municipalities of Jutphaas and Vreeswijk merged. The new town was built for the expanding population of the city of Utrecht, and has grown rapidly.
