Bowles thought of himself primarily as a composer, consequently he rarely discussed his literary works. His novels and specially short stories are of underestimated value even today. One of his critics says 'Bowles is famous only among the famous.' Novels: The Sheltering Sky

       Up Above the World
       Let It Come Down
       The Spider's House
And a great number of excellent short stories.
