Pope Evaristus

Evaristus, fourth pope (c. 98-105). Also known under the name of Aristus. Little is known about Evaristus. According to Liber Pontificalis he came from a family of Hellenic origin, but had a father that was a Bethlehem Jew. He was elected during the reign of the Roman emperor Domitian, the time of the second general persecution. Liber Pontificalis also states that he divided Rome into seven diaconias. He is traditionally considered a martyr, but there is no historic proof of this.

Evaristus' feast is October 26.
