St. Paul is a town located in Virginia.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.92% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,000 people, 464 households, and 302 families residing in the town. The population density is 394.0/km² (1,023.2/mi²). There are 496 housing units at an average density of 195.4 persons/km² (507.5 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.70% White, 1.80% African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 1.30% from two or more races. 0.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 464 households out of which 28.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% are married couples living together, 12.3% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 34.9% are non-families. 33.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.16 and the average family size is 2.72.

In the town the population is spread out with 21.6% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 82.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $24,833, and the median income for a family is $39,125. Males have a median income of $31,563 versus $25,313 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,735. 19.3% of the population and 15.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 27.4% are under the age of 18 and 15.2% are 65 or older.
