Ship Pollution
Ship Pollution is an abbreviated form of the Protocol of 1978 Relating to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution From Ships, 1973. It is also known as MARPOL 73/78 (short for marine pollution).The original MARPOL protocol was signed on 17 February 1973, but never went into force. The current protocol is a combination of two treaties (1973 and 1978), and over the years has been modified by many amendments. It entered into force on 2 October 1983.
It was designed to minimise oil pollution of the seas.
The stated object is: To preserve the marine environment through the complete elimination of pollution by oil and other harmful substances and the minimization of accidental discharge of such substances.
