Shirley Porter

Shirley Porter is a British politician and convicted gerrymanderer. As Conservative leader of Westminster City Council she sold off council homes to people likely to vote Conservative at a cheaper price, between 1987 and 1989.

After conviction, she was ordered to pay a surcharge of £27,000,000, but fled to Israel, beyond the reach of English law. In January 2002 she claimed she only had assets of £300,000. According to the Sunday Times Rich List of 2001, for example, she had £69,000,000. She is believed to have disposed of the money in secret accounts, of which very little has been recovered.

In the early 1990s she was chairman of Chelverton Investments, which owned London radio station LBC. In 1993 station was unsuccessful in renewing its licences and Chelverton Investments went bankrupt in 1994.
