Upper Poppleton

Upper Poppleton is a village in the unitary authority of City of York in the north of England, by the River Ouse south of Nether Poppleton, and west of York, Yorkshire.

The name is derived from popel (pebble) and tun (hamlet, farm), and probably means "farmstead on pebbly soil". Upper Poppleton used to be referred to as "Land Poppleton" whilst Nether Poppleton was called "Water Poppleton".

The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book and belonged to the Archbishops of York. It became a Conservation Area in 1993.
