USS Shaw (DD-68)

The first USS Shaw (DD-68) was commissioned on 9 April 1917 and served during World War One as a convoy escort. On October 9, 1918 Shaw's rudder jammed while performing a zig-zag and she steamed directly in from of HMS Aquitania, which struck Shaw and cut off 90 feet of her bow and set her afire. Her crew managed to save the ship and she traveled under her own power first to Portsmouth and then to the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard for repairs. She served until decommissioned in 1922 and was transferred to the United States Coast Guard in 1926. Returned to the Navy in 1933, her name was retired to be used in the next Shaw and DD-68 was scrapped in 1934.
