Uusimaa Brigade

The Uusimaa Brigade (Swedish: Nylands Brigad, Finnish: Uudenmaan Prikaati) is a Finnish Navy unit located near Ekenäs. The brigade trains soldiers to fight in a coastal environment. It is the only unit in the Finnish Defence Forces where the training is given in Swedish.

Organisation

  • Vasa Coastal Jaeger Battalion
  • Raseborg Coastal Artillery Battalion
  • Non-commissioned officer school

The Vasa Coastal Jaeger Battalion trains coast
jaegers, boatsmen, anti-tank infantry and engineers. The Raseborg Coastal Artillery Battalion trains troops for the mobile coast artillery which is used to fire at targets both on land and at sea.

History

The Uusimaa brigade follows the traditions of the Nyland regiment, which was established by Gustav II Adolf in 1626. The regiment distinguished itself in the Battle of Siikajoki during the Finnish War. The brigade also traces back its history to the 3rd Jaeger Regiment during the Finnish Civil War and the 4th Infantry Regiment (JR4) during World War II.
