Verden's bloody trialVerden's bloody trial was a massacre on Lower Saxons in 800, committed by Charlemagne. It is believed that 4500 Saxons were beheaded at Verden. Today, it is being questioned whether such a high figure is realistic. There may have been a misspelling in the original source between delocati and decollati, meaning expatriate instead of behead. Charlemagne's reason was to demonstrate his leadership. As a memorial site the Nazis assembled the Sachsenhain consisting of about 1000 big stones in Verden. |
