Volyn region

Volyn Region or Volynskaya Oblast is the most northwestern administrative district of present-day Ukraine bordering Belarus to the north and Poland to the west. The capital of the oblast is Lutsk, Kovel is the most westernly town and terminus of the Ukrainian rail line that runs from Kovel through to Kiev. Volyn was once part of Poland and once part of the Russian Empire when it was called the Volynskaya Guberniya.

During World War II, a Ukrainian nationalist organisation organized ethnic cleansing in Volyn, which resulted in the death of 30,000-60,000 Poles in Volyn alone. In fighting with Polish self-defense units and in Polish retaliation actions around 2,500 Ukrainians died.
