When My Baby Smiles at Me

When My Baby Smiles at Me is the name of a popular song and of a motion picture.

When My Baby Smiles at Me, music by Harry Von Tilzer and Bill Munro with words by Andrew B. Sterling and Ted Lewis, was published by Von Tilzer Publishing in 1920. It was one of the year's biggest hits. Ted Lewis's Jazz Band recording was particularly successfull, and the tune became associated with Lewis, who re-recorded it several times over the years. The tune was also covered by other artists of the time.

When My Baby Smiles at Me is a 1948 musical film which tells the story of a vaudeville couple who encounter problems when his drinking, as well as his more successful career, comes between them. It stars Betty Grable, Dan Dailey, Jack Oakie, June Havoc and Richard Arlen.

The movie was adapted by Elizabeth Reinhardt and Lamar Trotti from the play Burlesque by Arthur Hopkins and George Manker Watters. It was directed by Walter Lang.

It was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Dan Dailey) and Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture.
