Zumtobel Lighting Group was founded in 1950 by Dr. Walter Zumtobel as "Elektrogeräte- und Kunstharzpreßwerk W. Zumtobel KG" in Dornbirn, Austria. The company produces ballasts for the newly introduced fluorescent light fittings.

Thorn Lighting was founded in 1928 by Jules Thorn. In 1981 Thorn introduces the 2D compact fluorescent lamp, an energy saving replacement for the ordinary light bulb. In 1993 Thorn Lighting was acquired from Thorn EMI in leveraged management buy-out.
